What if Britain hadn't entered WWI?
Just seen this on another footy website?

So what would have happened if we hadn't entered? Would WWII have happened? Great Depression? It would have kicked off with Germany anyway?

What's your view NS?

Well if Germany had been France and the Russians then there would have been a stand off but war would have eventually happened. Also, Hitler wouldn't have come to reign as his whole argument was based off of WW1.

would we then have kept our empire?

I agree that war between us and Germany would likely have happened sooner or later

Ireland wouldn't have become fully independent. They were about to get home rule, but it was deferred when war started.

LOL at the thought of the biggest empire in the world at the time not getting involved with a fucking massive war between all the other empires on its doorstep.

Colonialism would have lasted longer and Europe would be a lot richer, more powerful, more militaristic and more nationalistic than it is today.

Roughly the same number would have drunk themselves to death (cause the licensing laws didn't change) as died in the trenches.
We'd have a United Europe, controlled by Germany, so just the same then really.

what if we had gone in on the side of Germany?

Which was not entirely impossible

Re: What if Britain hadn't entered WWI?
If the other side won WW1, the Ottoman Empire would probably still be about as well, and lets be honest they'd probably have done a better job with the middle east than what we've ended up with.

Bigger question is what would have happened if we'd done what Hitler wanted and been on their side in WW2, or if Germany had won it?

Re: What if Britain hadn't entered WWI?
Britain should not have entered the war. It was a colossal mistake.

For a start we had nothing at stake in the dispute between Austria and Serbia over the assassination. But equally we had no territorial or other disputes with Germany to speak of. Germany's empire was tiny - a barren patch of desert in south west africa and a small slice of east africa where German and British farmers got on very well as neighbours.

We had much larger issues with Russia, whose ambitions in Asia and in the Black Sea directly threatened British interests.

We entered the war only because the French - who were uniquely responsible for turning a local dispute in the Balkans into the carnage of the first world war - leaned so heavily on Asquith and Grey to protect French ports in the Channel.

They argued that by signing the Entente, Britain had de facto guaranteed the Channel ports and was therefore under an obligation to protect them. It's flimsy as a pretext for war and indeed there was much rejoicing in Paris when they realised it had actually worked.

Italy by the way, stayed out of the war despite being a signatory to the Triple Alliance which created a much clearer obligation on them to join Germany and Austria when the war started. They eventually joined the war in 1915 - but on the other side, hoping to pick up some scraps from Britain and France in the peace accords.

If Britain had not entered the war Germany would have won, and quite quickly too.

British Empire troops were a decisive factor in the war and although there were no material naval engagements other than Jutland, the Royal Navy prevented Germany from blockading France by sea.

If Germany had won, most likely there would have been some further territory ceded from France to Germany, but essentially all the disputed areas were already German because of the Franco-Prussian war 45 years earlier. So not much change.

The really big question is what would have happened in Russia if Germany had won. Would the Bolsheviks have come to power? Probably not. More likely the Tsar would have been forced to make reforms and cede power to a properly representative parliament. Russia might well have progressed to a proper democratic state instead of being plunged into the human and global catastrophe of Soviet Communism, which killed far more than the Great War.
